According to a report from entertainment blog We Got This Covered, Sony is planning to introduce an LGBT Spiderman, who will be bisexual and have a boyfriend to meet the demand for increased diversity in comic book characters.

Previous Spiderman actor Tom Holland has said that a bisexual Spiderman would be a “very progressive way to kind of create a new character,” but he has indicated that his Spiderman would not be the LGBT character in question.

Sources told We Got This Covered, that following Holland’s lobbying for an LGBT tweak to Spidey, Sony might grant the actor his wishes. The entertainment blog went onto report that Andrew Garfield, who has also portrayed Spiderman, would be keen to fill the role of a gay Spiderman.

Garfield reportedly suggested that Spiderman should be played as a gay man in 2013.

According to The Christian Post, he said: “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ (Mary Jane, or Spider-Man’s main love) … And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

Speaking with the Sunday Times in June last year, Holland gave his opinion about the prospect of a gay Spiderman.

He said, “Of course. I can’t talk about the future of the character because, honestly, I don’t know, and it’s out of my hands. But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years.”

Turning up the wokeness, Holland added, “The world isn’t as simple as a straight white guy. It doesn’t end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person.”

In recent months, there’s been an uptick in including more LGBT themes and characters into comic series.

National File reported on what was called ‘Marvel’s first trans superhero,’ who turned out to be a twelve-year-old trans girls whose father is a pastor and gains access to puberty blockers via the church’s insurance.
